The paradise of tigers, Bandhavgarh is truly a scenic landscape full of surprises in the incredible state of Madhya Pradesh in India. It houses a huge density of royal Bengal tigers and several other fauna species.  

Bandhavgarh National Park needs no introduction when it comes to wildlife conservation. If you are heading to Bandhavgarh, you may definitely not want to come back without spotting a tiger. It goes without saying that this national park always tops the list for bird watchers and nature lovers. 

It is truly a delight for wildlife sightings and photography. The terrains here are loaded with natural beauty and tourists. Once you get there, you will be so enthralled with its natural beauty that you will come back for more. With that said, let’s check out some of the lesser-known tourist attractions in and around Bandhavgarh National Park. 

Reaching to Bandhavgarh:

The nearest railway station to reach Bandhavgarh National Park is “Umaria Junction”. You may visit the national park from October 15 to June 30. The opening timings are morning 7 AM to 5.30 PM, Monday to Friday. 

Jungle Safari:

Stretched over the vast expanse of 593 sq. miles, Bandhavgarh National Park is truly a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers and getting there is like a dream comes true. It also houses several endangered and rare species like Chitals, Indian Bison, and Langurs. 

There are some other famous species that can be easily spotted are Chausingha, Nilgai, Chinkara, jackals, and wild boars during the national park safari. Bandhavgarh also attracts birdwatchers with over 250 bird species like steppe eagles, green pigeons, brown fantails, white Malabar hornbills, gray Malabar hornbills, browed fantails, Bee-eaters, white-bellied drongos, parakeets, and gold fronted birds. 

When visiting Bandhavgarh, you just can’t miss national park safari. Usually, jeep safari is organized in open 6-seater vehicles at specific time slots. It offers a great wildlife watching experience. The jeep passes through the main gate across the Sal forests and grasslands. You can have hours of the safari experience at the national park. 

Time Slots

From October 15 to February 15 – Safari is available from 6.30 AM to 11 AM and 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM

From February 16 to March 31 – Safari is available from 6 AM to 11 AM and from 3 PM to 6 PM

From April 1 to June 30 – Time slots are from 5.30 AM to 10 AM and from 4 PM to 7 PM

5 Unknown Tourist Attraction Places & Their Histories

1. Ancient Caves

After having morning safari, don’t forget to stop at some of the ancient sandstone hillocks. There are around 39 caves in Bandhavgarh stretched over the premise. The actual purpose for which this cave system was made is still not known. These caves are around 5 km long. But you have to ask the experts before entering these caves as they might have bears, tigers and different snakes. Badi Gufa is the most popular cave which is believed to be dated back to the 10th century, according to the locals. 

2. Bandhavgarh Fort

Bandhavgarh, which refers to “Brother’s Fort”, has been named after this centuries-old fort. According to mythological tales, after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama took a stop here and built this fort. Then, he gifted the fort to Lakshmana, his brother, to keep an eye on Lanka. Lord Lakshmana is still worshiped as the Lord of the Fort “Bandhavdhish” at this fort. 

You can also spot the reclining statue of Lord Vishnu which was built in the 10th century in the premises, who is seated on a 7-hooded snake. You would also find a spring, the source of a stream of Charan Ganga flowing through the jungle. 

To reach the main gate of Bandhavgarh Fort (Karn Pol), you have to trek along the hill. There are also Pug marks to follow and intricate carvings on the rocks. You can have a beautiful 360-degree view of the national park when you reach the fort. 

3. Tala Village 

Located around the Tala gate of the national park, the quaint and sleepy village of Tala is located on the lowest point of the wildlife sanctuary. You can get an insight into the peaceful life of villagers by getting there. Over the years, Tala Village has been home to a lot of resorts and hotels. You may visit this beautiful little village and meet the locals in their huts. You can also visit the local stalls selling street foods. 

4. Forest Museum

If you are interested in exploring the history of royal people, you must visit the “Forest Museum”. The whole premises of the museum were once lived by the “Maharaja of Rewa”. It was a palace that has all the assets of the king, along with his hunting gears and equipment. You can also spot the stuffed body of a white tiger killed by the Maharaja and several other royal exhibits in the museum. 

You may definitely want to explore this property of “Shikargarh”. Tourists usually visit here to gather all the important information and knowledge about the wildlife here. You can definitely get here with family and friends to have a great experience. The museum opens from 10 AM to 3 PM and from 5 PM to 8 PM.

5. Jwalamukhi Temple 

Located on the Charan Ganga River and around 10 km from the national park, Jwalamukhi Temple is a well-known address for the tourists. Locals believe that you can fulfill all your wishes if you get here with full faith in the heart and make a wish. This temple has peaceful vibes all around. So, relax and spend some time here to feel it yourself.
